Dros y blynyddoedd, mae maint paentiadau Llwyd Evans wedi cynyddu – o ddyfrlliwiau bach i’r mwyaf hyd yn hyn, sef gwaith mewn olew sy’n mesur 170x150cm. TEN is delighted to present a solo exhibition by painter Catrin Llwyd Evans, her fourth at the gallery

This collection of new paintings continue Llwyd Evans’s theme of narrative-filled landscapes, imbued with hints at human presence, offering glimpses of scenes and stories. Her paintings are prompted by her observations of her homeland – a story, colour, a particular composition or an emotion. At times veering towards the abstract, the paintings fluctuate between reality and illusion - rousing a memory or ambiguous familiarity

Set in the twilight hours between dusk and moonrise, these oil on canvas paintings are dark and moody. The colour palette is muted - save for a few examples of bright neon ground, peeking through the painted image. The mark-making is confident, flowing and immediate, resulting in artworks full of painterly quality

Over the years, the scale of Llwyd Evans’s paintings have grown - from small watercolours to the biggest yet, a 170x150cm oil. ‘In the Light of the Moon’ takes centre stage, a bright full moon in a cloudless darkening sky above silhouetted tree-tops. A near identical image - ‘Full Moon’ is minute in comparison, 23cm in length, with a yellow moon, its glow pulsating. Llwyd Evans’s approach to her process remains the same, whatever the scale of the surface, and that is the skilled, delicate, energetic brushstrokes which transports us to those places close to her heart

‘‘After Dark’ explores the quiet mystery of night time landscapes — where houses hide among the trees, their faint lights flickering like distant signals, as the full moon casts its glow over silent scenes. Through these paintings, I seek to capture the mysterious space of night, where familiar places take on an otherworldly presence, and the unseen feels just within reach. Shadows and light, absence and presence, solitude and wonder — all intertwine to invite the viewer into a world that is both intimate and unidentifiable, seen and felt only after dark’ - Catrin Llwyd Evans
