Ac yna, llonyddwch:
Tu hwnt iddi, mae’r haul
yn llenwi fory rhywun arall - Elen Ifan
Pleser yw cyhoeddu arddangosfa undyn Elfyn Lewis gyda TEN – y 6ed rydym wedi ei chynnal gyda’n gilydd
Enwog yw Lewis am ei arddull o ‘dynnu’ paent ar hyd arwyneb y llun gan defnyddio trywel, gan adeiladu haenau ar ben haenau o baent trwchus
Bu datblygiad pwysig yn null cyfarwydd Lewis – sef ‘dal’ llif y paent. Mae’r paent - sydd cymaint rhan o’r gelf, ac yn elfen nodedig o’r gwaith - yn awr fel petai wedi’i rewi yn y fan. Daw’r haenau hynny yn fwy amlwg fyth wrth gronni yn byllau ar ymylon yr arwynebedd, wedi’u dal o’r cefn gan bren. Dyma rhan o broses Lewis, sef yr hyn oedd yn cael ei adael ar ôl ar fwrdd y stiwdio – y gorlifo hwnnw - nawr yn rhan allweddol o’r gwaith
Gwel y corff diweddaraf yma dawelu ar y palette, gyda clwstwr cyfyng o liwiau yn cael eu defnyddio - coch magenta, gwyrdd emerallt, glas cyan, du a gwyn. Mewn ambell i ddarn, ond dau liw a welir ar yr arwyneb, yn cwrdd mewn llinell gorwel niwlog. Mae’r gwead gorffenedig yn llyfn a di-dor - heb y ‘cicio’, a’r sgaffriadau a oedd, ar un adeg, mor ganolog i’r gwaith. Canlyniad hyn yw bod natur tawel, myfyriol yn dod i’r amlwg

It is a pleasure to announce Elfyn Lewis' solo exhibition ‘Gweledigaeth’ - the 6th that we’ve presented together
Lewis is famous for his style of 'pulling' paint across the surface of the picture using a trowel or squeegee, building layers upon layers of thick paint
There’s been an important development in Lewis's familiar method - that of 'capturing' the flow of paint. The paint - which is so much a part of the art, and a distinctive element of the work - is now as if frozen in place. Those layers become amplified further as they accumulate in pools on the edges, held from the back by wood. Here we see part of Lewis’s process which was left on the studio table – that overflow has become an integral part of his paintings
This latest body sees a calming of the palette, with only a cluster of colours being used - magenta red, emerald green, cyan blue, black and white. In a few pieces, only two colours are seen on the surface, meeting in a haze of a horizon line. The finished texture is smooth and flowing - without the knicks and the catches which, at one time, were so central to the work. The result of this is that a quiet, meditative nature emerges

‘ ‘Ac yna, llonyddwch…’
Dros y blynyddoedd diwethaf dwi wedi bod yn gweithio ar gyfres o waith lle’r oeddwn yn tynnu popeth allan o’r llun er mwyn creu math o dawelwch.
Mae’r gyfres yma yn dal sylw, ac yn creu rhyw fath o deimlad o rywle anghysbell. Roeddwn angen creu llai i neud rhywbeth mwy, rhywbeth oedd yn tynnu’r sŵn a’r bwrlwm o fyw mewn dinas brysur’ - Elfyn Lewis

‘ ‘Ac yna, llonyddwch… [and then, stillness…]’
Over the last few years I've been developing a series of works where I was taking things out from the work in order to create a kind of silence.
This series catches the viewer’s attention, and creates a feeling of somewhere remote. I needed to do less to create something more, something that takes away the noise and bustle of living in a busy city’ - Elfyn Lewis
